520 |a At the turn of the 19th c., aestheticism could not develop to its extreme in Slovene literature, as Slovene literature, despite the emphasis on its aesthetics function, was still nationally bound. Slovene Symbolism therefore did not entirely break with the tradition, which is reflected in, among other things, frequent use of the folklore tradition as an intertextual model. The article shows how the folkloric world came to life in the poetry of the Slovene Moderna, based on selected poets of this period, e. g., Dragotin Kette, Josip Murn Aleksandrov, Ivan Cankar, Oton Župančič, Alojz Gradnik, Rudolf Maister, Cvetko Golar, Fran Eller, and Ljudmila Poljanec. Proceeding from the poetics of literary subjectivism, they treated the folkloricmythological tradition fairly loosely, summarizing, altering, supplementing, or transforming it to the point of opposite meanings. The folkloric tradition as an intertextual model came alive in lyric poetry of the Slovene Moderna not so much as an intertextual imitation, but rather in a form of intertextual transfers that allowed its free transformation, supplementation, and disintegration on the textual level (motif, character, symbol, motivic-topical reminiscence). In this process, central semantic shifts towards the folkloric-mythological model arise. On the level of linguistic style adopting the means of expression of folk poetry or connecting them with the modern poetic form and sentiment is more prevalent than the change. The article shows that the poetry of the Slovene Moderna-by means intertextual imitation and transfer-adopted folkloric motifs, connected with folk customs and celebrations (jurjevanje, kresovanje, šentjaževo, martinovanje, gregorjevo), Christian saints (St. Florian, St. Michael), beliefs in folkloric-demonic creatures (jack-o'-lantern, vampire, wolfman, fairies, goblins), symbolism of flowers with folkloric connotations (rose, rosemary), symbolism of black birds (crows, vultures), motifs of the deseti brat (tenth brother), lepa Vida (The beatiful Vida), and Kralj Matjaž (King Matthew)
