520 |a Cellular and other highly porous materials have been increasingly used in modern engineering structures. To take full advantage of these materials it is necessary to understand and properly determine their mechanical properties. There are three ways of characterizing cellular materials: (i) experimental testing, (ii) analytical approach and (iii) computational simulations. The experimental testing is still most commonly used. Its results may then be used to derive appropriate idealized analytical models. Practical use of such analytical models in engineering applications is very limited since cellular materials often have very complex geometry, topology and morphology. However, the use of modern computational techniques allows to account for these complexities and furthermore enables simultaneous analysis of different parameter effects on cellular structure behavior under various loading conditions. Computational simulations are thus very attractive due to their effectiveness and reliability. This paper describes different approaches of computational modeling and simulations of cellular materials and structures.
