520 |a Poet and writer Andrej Gutman was born on 25th November 1784 at Žetinci near Radkersburg (Radgonski kot); he died on 10th July 1850 at Ratten, Styria (Austria). His poems were published in the booklet entitled Novi vedež by Vrazovo društvo za izdavanje slovenskih knjig in Graz (1838); a few years later, in 1841, an author's own collection of poems was published, printed in bohoričica script. The poems are lively paintings, featuring naturalistic, amost drastic vocabulary and 'robust' metaphors. One can tell that he used to live next door to Slovenske Gorice, still there are some words in his poems which are not umlauted although in the northern part of Slovenske Gorice, Prlekija and Prekmurje they are. The Radgonski kot dialect features interference of northeastern part of Slovenske Gorice dialect and, to a lesserdegree, of Prlekija dialect, apart from obvious elements of Prekmurje dialect. Let me mention some of them. The word dar' is a blend of Prlekija word dere and Prekmurje word gdar, in that, off and on, the poet used to write dare. Case forms v 'kouti, k v'rage are of Štajerska and Prekmurje origin in that in Prekmurje a diphtong is pronounced (v 'kouti). The case form z ro'koj is of Štajerska origin, for in Prekmurje it is pronounced z ro'kouf. The accusative case form zobi, too, can be heard on either bank of the Mura River, as well asthe phrase se o'gene for se 'ogne. The noun gut (for throat) is quite common in all of the dialects of the region, as well as the adjectival form 'pesji, the verb 'segneš (for sežes) and the conjunction či (for če). The structure 'dokler nej je mrak has been interered, the Prlekija variant being 'dokič je ne and the Prekmurje variant being do 'ke:c 'neje t'mica (k'mica, 'täma). The word 'nekda (for nekoč) is the same throughout the region (the Prekmurje variant being 'nögda). The word 'nekerne (for nekatere, prenekatere) and the word s'ledna (for ona) are localisms. Gutman's originality is at its most obvious in his robust, unscrupulous poetic expression when dealing with life's distress, bad habits and dirty tricks. Recent research work of dialects have been marked by socio-linguistic issues which is quite characteristic of various levels of the use of dialects thus one can detect correlations between dialect and social stratum. In the case of Gutman one can speak of naturalistic style as a very specific image of moral analysis with the help of an interferential language. He uses a varied and picturesque regional language in order to bring his texts closer not only to the people of a certain region but also to the people of the two neighbouring regions.
