520 | |a Coal is a combustible black or brownish-black sedimentary rock. Lignite, also referred to as brown coal, is the lowest rank of coal and used almost exclusively as a fuel for electric power generation to produce electricity andheat through combustion. The most important property, which indicates the useful energy content of coal, is its caloric value. This descriptor varies significantly depending on the type of coal, the ash and moisture contents. The aim of this work is focused on coal quality classification of the coal samples originated from two Slovenian coal mines. The coal quality was daily monitored during four years and the following descriptors were measured: moisture, ash and sulphur content and the caloric value determined by the bombcalorimetric method. Basic statistics and several methods of multidimensional data analysis, namely the correlation analysis, principal component analysis (PCA), cluster analysis (CA), and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) were used for evaluation of analytical results. The caloric value was positively correlated with content of sulphur and moisture and strongly negatively correlated with content of ash. Statistically significant differences were observed in the coal quality when compared the samples sites. The coal from coal mine Hrastnik had a better quality according to the coal mined in Trbovlje. Moreover the monitored descriptors varied within the defined time period. | ||
