Izvleček: | Binding of metal particles on the textile materials has long been one of the most researched areas in the development of antimicrobial textiles. The current interest is to develop efficient, durable and cost effective antimicrobial finishing of textiles with increased applications in medical, health care, hygienic products as well as protective textile materials. This paper describes a possible approach for rendering conventional regenerated cellulose fibres (modal fibres) antimicrobial. Silver particles, being well-known antimicrobial agent were chosen as an active component. The approach is based on using pre-dispersed suspension of silver chloride particles, admixed into a solution of silane binder (sol-gel system). In order to achieve the required level of antimicrobial activity (even after several washing), optimized procedure for treatment of fibres was needed. To this end, three factor analysis was employed, which allows for systematic comparison of different parameters and the effect they have on the results of the experiments. The concentration of AgCl dispersion, the concentration of the aqueous solution of the silane binder and the time of curing (fixation of adsorbed particles) of treated fibres were varied. Efficiency of the treatment procedure at a certain set of experimental conditions was evaluated by determination of silver content (with atomic absorption spectroscopy), present on the fibres and, consequently, level of their antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae (with standard method AATCC100-1990). Functionalized antimicrobial fibres are expected to retain their activity upon repeated washing cycles. For this reason, the leaching of silver from fibres, treated according to optimized procedure was tested with a washing test, adapted from a standard test method for color fastness to washing ISO 105-C03 and with a determination of silver amount on the unwashed and washed fibres. |
