| 520 | |a The consumption of cellulose fabric is increasing due to the natural materials trend. To improve the properties of products, such as creasing or swelling, and to improve the dimensional stability, crease resistant finishing is used. About 95% of classical crease resistant finishes contain formaldehyde, which makes them environment-unfriendly. To understand the problems related to formaldehyde, methods and limited values determined by regulations are presented. Because of the discussions about the allergic potential and cancerogenous properties of formaldehyde the classification according to ecological and toxicological properties of crease-resistant finishes is necessary. The most important reseach work is focussed on formaldehyde-poor and formaldehyde-free crease resistant finishing. Among the latter only 1,3-dimethyl-4,5dihydroxyethilenurea (DMeDHEU) is successful on the market. The ecological and toxicological classification of cloths follows the effect on formaldehyde on the consumer. The recently dveloped new formaldehyde-free crease resistant finishes no longer threat the envirionment or the consumer. The ecological and the toxicological properties are in the range of permitted values, but their technological and economical properties are poorer. | ||
