520 |a Andrej Čebokli (1893-1923) is a representative of Slovene Expressionism in the prose, the beginnings of which in the initial phases of the First World War developed with the Catholic periodical Dom in svet (Home and the World). Andrej Čebokli began as a poet, but he soon switched to short prose, and in the course of his short life published about 15 novelettes. Slovene literary theory describes him as a representative of the early Slovene Expressionismen, but it was not until recently that he was treated more in detail. As an officer of the Austrian army, Čebokli took part in several fronts, spending most of the time in various military barracks due to severe rheumatism. The suffering and dying of soldiers in military hospitals is thus the central theme of his novelettes, and in the background of war other expressionist toposes are revealed such as dichotomy at the level of man versus woman, body and soul, life and death, silence and scream. Čebokli's novelette is lyrically fragmentary, displaying characteristics of telegraphic and allegorically-symbolic style. Metaphorically speaking, Čebolki's novelettes are rich, frequently with grotesque visions, visualisations of emotional states, sound, and characterised by intensive colour metaphors and symbols, and awe-inspiring colour-sound synestheses and grotesque personifications.
